Army/Navy veteran, Al Marconi, has been an integral part of Cloverlane Foundation for several years and attributes much of his improved quality of life and mobility to working with the foundation. He not only is an extremely skilled archer himself, but he also teaches other veterans archery. His hope is to inspire, motivate and encourage Veterans to get involved in archery, not only for their physical well-being, but also for the feeling of self-worth that the sport provides.
Al recently competed in the 2024 Desert Challenge Games in Mesa, Arizona. The games took place between May 28th and June 2nd. He competed in archery and air pistol and took home GOLD in both events.
When talking with Al about his wins, I could hear the overwhelming happiness in his voice. Competing in these games, Archery especially, has given him a second chance at life after he was struck by a hit and run driver in 2006. He became wheelchair bound after the accident and it was not until he began physical therapy and taught himself archery that his life completely changed. When speaking about his improved mobility, he credits archery for allowing him to regain the strength to do things like walk, stand up on his own or do housework, which he has not been able to do since the accident. Today he has regained the strength to do things that he was sure he could never do again.
His story is a stark reminder to be grateful for the little things, like having the ability to get out of bed or tidy up the house. His success shows in a big way what we can accomplish if put in the work.
We are so proud of you, Al.
